Sonoma County, California Recording Fees

Recording a deed in Sonoma County costs about $17 and a mortgage about $59 (a 2-page deed ($14 + $3) and a 16-page mortgage ($14 + 15 x $3), for a document on which documentary transfer tax is paid or an exemption is noted on the first page (the normal case for a home purchase)), per the Sonoma County Clerk-Recorder-Assessor's fee schedule, effective 2016-07-01. Same statewide base fee as every California county under Gov't Code 27361 ($14 first page, $3 each additional page). Sonoma County's own page explains that if a document does NOT show that documentary transfer tax was paid or an exemption, the first-page fee jumps to $91.00 (a $75 Building Homes and Jobs Act/SB2 fee plus a $2 AB1466 fee stacked on top of the $14 base); a standard home-sale deed and its purchase-money mortgage both show the transfer-tax payment, so neither the $75 nor the $2 fee applies and the total is the plain $14/$3 schedule used above.
